Spartanburg District One Schools Teachers-of-the-Year for 2009-2010 are sponsoring a candidate forum for the House Districts 37 and 38 primary and general election. The candidate forum will be held in the auditorium at Landrum High School on May 17, at 6:30 p.m. All candidates running in Districts 37 and 38 have been invited to attend.
Karen Shinault, District One Teacher-of-the-Year and organizer of this event said, “State Superintendent Dr. Jim Rex recently stated in an article that ‘South Carolina is at the 11th hour. And next year is midnight.’ As educators, we come to our jobs daily with high expectations from our students because that is our responsibility. I truly believe that individuals who have chosen this profession have a vested interest in our future generations. Our nation has thrived in all areas because of freedom, democracy, and heart. Our teachers and our communities are very interested in the upcoming elections. This forum gives us the opportunity to hear the candidates positions that are very important to the citizens in our area.”
Each candidate will have the opportunity to make an opening statement about his/her platform. The Teachers-of-the-Year will ask each candidate a series of questions provided by teachers and staff from each school in District One. At the conclusion of the session, the audience will have the opportunity to ask questions of the candidates and each will provide closing remarks.
Shinault added, “Spartanburg County District One Schools exemplify their motto of being ‘student-centered.’ Despite budget cuts and hard economic times, the administrators, teachers, and communities continue to support the students and their endeavors to achieve their dreams. I am excited to be a part of such an outstanding school district. It is with great excitement and enthusiasm that the 2009-2010 District One Teachers-of-the-Year will be hosting a Candidate Forum for House Districts 37 and 38 on Monday, May 17 at Landrum High School.”
Dr. Ronald W. Garner, Superintendent of District One Schools added, “We hope to have good representation from the candidates and our community at this forum. Our Teachers-of-the-Year are sponsoring this event so that voters can have an opportunity to get information first-hand from the candidates. One of our greatest privileges as Americans is the right to participate in the electoral process.”
