Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

I had a special treat at recycling yesterday. One of the veteran recyclers showed up after a long absence. She had been dealing with major problems with her vision. The first time I saw her ten years ago, I rushed over to help her with the large plastic container full of newspapers she was carrying. She said, “Thanks, but I’m able to do this.”

She lugged it over to the back of the paper bin, put one foot on the stairs, pushed the container up against the bin, got her head under it, and using her legs, raised it to the top of the bin and tipped it in. I stood close by, surprised at what she was able to do, all 100 pounds of her. She had to be in her 80s. Since then, I’ve learned to always ask before I help.

Yesterday, ten years after that first encounter, she used the same maneuver. You can see why I have such admiration for the indomitability of many recyclers; they don’t give up, which inspires me not to give up either.

Our pick up locations are at Harmon Field behind the TACs building (turn in at the tennis courts) on Monday, Saluda on Tuesday (go over the bridge on Rt. 176, down the hill and turn right up the hill to see Rich), Green Creek Fire Dept. on Wed. and behind the old museum in Columbus on Thursday. We are at all locations from 7 a.m. to noon.

Aside from corrugated cardboard and paper, we take containers that hold food or household products. All bottles and plastic containers with a “1” through “7” in a triangle on the bottom are acceptable. All other plastics, such as coat hangers, packing materials, bags, implements, and Styrofoam, are not acceptable, nor is glass, except for bottles. No metal, except cans, is recyclable at the truck. All metal is recyclable at the dump. Containers that have held herbicides, pesticides, antifreeze, gasoline, oil, or other poisons are not recyclable.

We also accept a variety of light bulbs and batteries, except for car batteries, which must be taken to the dump.
