Public invited to opening reception on January 26

TRYON—Upstairs Artspace has announced the opening of Drawing Marathon VI, its first exhibition of 2025. This will be a very special show, as many of the 21 participating artists’ studios and livelihoods were impacted by Hurricane Helene.

The show opens on Sunday, January 26, at 2 p.m. with a public reception. The exhibition will last through February 28.

Every other year, Upstairs Artspace reaches out to a select group of artists to come to the gallery to draw for a two-day marathon. Over the weekend of January 18-19, both floors of the gallery became workspace. The artists filled the gallery, taking over tables, easels, the floor and the walls with all sorts of projects, from charcoal to collage, watercolor to pen and ink, colored pencil to oils to acrylic.

“There is something truly magical and synergistic about working in the company of other artists that generates its own creative energy,” says Upstairs board member and Drawing Marathon organizer Margaret Curtis. “I have participated in and look forward to this event every year it is offered. We hope the Drawing Marathon is a gift of time and focus to the artists, to nurture their creativity in fellowship and communion with our vibrant community of artist friends.”

Participating artists include Ursula Gullow, Walter Gurbo, Chris Curtis, Brandon Sprouls, Marty Epp-Carter, Susan Martin, Damian Stamer, Stacey Davidson, Megan Allen, Phil Garrett, Jim Campbell, Margaret Curtis, David Gerhard, Janet Orselli, Kim Dick, Jeremy Phillips, Cyrus Glance, Scott Cunningham, William Price, Patricia Sahertian and Dale McEntire.

The gallery is located at 49 S. Trade St., in Tryon, next to the movie theater. For more information, visit upstairsartspace.org.
