TRYON—The Tryon History Museum’s 10th Anniversary celebration will take place Thursday, September 26, through Sunday, September 29. To commemorate the milestone, the Museum is celebrating with a weekend of socializing and entertainment across downtown Tryon. These events are all open to the public and limited only by space and supplies.

Kicking off the festivities on Thursday, September 26th, is an entry in The Tales of Tryon: Lecture Series, sponsored by the Polk County Community Foundation. Local author Drew Hines will discuss his new book, Hidden History of the Dark Corner, at the Holy Cross Parish Hall (150 Melrose Ave, Tryon) beginning at 5 p.m., with doors opening at 4 p.m. Refreshments will be available beforehand.

On Friday, September 27, the Tryon Downtown Development Association will host live music on the Tryon Plaza as part of its monthly Fourth Friday celebrations. Additionally, the Museum will host a welcome reception on location (26 Maple St, Tryon), a stone’s throw from the plaza, from 5 to 7 p.m. This reception is a perfect opportunity to meet the museum’s board and invaluable volunteers.

Saturday, September 28, will open with a classic car show starting at 9 a.m. and running until 2 p.m., where numerous private collectors will gather on McCown street to show off their preserved history. Starting at 11:30 a.m., a classic barbershop quartet will begin walking the downtown, providing peppy song to the public until 3:30 p.m.

Beginning at noon and running until 2 p.m., a free Ice Cream Social will be held on the Tryon Plaza, with one free scoop per attendee as supplies last at the Ice Cream Truck.

Directly following the car show, The Tryon Theatre (45 S. Trade St, Tryon) will be showing a free matinee screening of the beloved equestrian film, National Velvet. The film will start at 2:30 p.m. with doors opening at 2. To reserve seating for the film, select a free ticket on the theatre’s website (www.tryontheatre.com), or go and request one in person during the theatre’s weekly open hours.

The festivities will culminate on Sunday, September 29, with a two-stage evening of mature sophistication (grown-ups only). Firstly, The Tryon Bottle (15 S. Trade St, Tryon) will host two social hours of drinks, with catering provided by Chef Sharone. This will begin at 4:30 and run until 6:30 p.m. The Tryon Bottle has a wide selection of beer and wines, and charcuterie boards can be pre-arranged with Chef Sharone.

This socializing leads directly into another free film hosted by The Tryon Theatre, starting at 7 p.m., with doors opening at 6:30. This film is the historical silent film “Sherlock Holmes,” starring local actor William Gillette. The film is celebrated as one of the most complex and modern films of the silent era.
