The Krickets will perform Thursday at the Tryon Fine Arts Center’s Americana Concert Series at its amphitheater. The band is a two-time Independent Music Association Song of the Year winner in both the folk and alt-country categories, but the band refers to its music as “swamp folk” after it added an instrument called a gitjo, a banjo strung like a guitar. 

“When we added that instrument it gave like a swampy, soupy kind of sound to our songs,” says Emily Stuckey who does vocals, guitar and percussion. “We were like swamp folk!  That’s what we are!”

Stuckey is joined by Lauren Spring on vocals, guitar and fiddle and Rachel Grubb on vocals, bass and guitar. All three are from gulf coast towns just east of Mobile, Alabama. They first sang together in 2014 at a cancer benefit in honor of the late Cricket Russell, the band’s namesake. 

“When we sang together, we just kind of all knew that was it, that was our band,” says Stuckey.

The Crickets changed to The Krickets in deference to Buddy Holly’s old band. The group raised money from its fans to record its first album in 2015 with Ben Tanner of The Alabama Shakes in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. A dollar from the sale of every Krickets album goes to The Cricket Fund which helps low-income gulf coast residents pay for cancer-related care. 

This is the second of five concerts in TFAC’s 2024 Americana Amphitheater Concert Series. Season passes are available for $45 and individual tickets can be purchased on-line in advance for $10 or at the gate on the day of the show for $12. Beer, wine, and other beverages will be available for purchase and there’s a food truck at every concert.
