The theme for National Library Week 2024 (April 7-13), “Ready, Set, Library!,” promotes the idea that in our always-online world, libraries give us a green light to something truly special: a place to connect with others, learn new skills, and focus on what matters most. No matter where you find yourself on the roadmap through life’s journey—preparing for a new career, launching a business, or raising a family—your library provides an inclusive and supportive community where everyone belongs. Get ready to explore, become inspired, and connect with your library this National Library Week. Libraries are there for you, all the way to the finish line. Here are some upcoming events at Polk County Public Libraries!
Slow Flow Yoga
Every Thursday in April, starting at 10 a.m. at the Columbus Library, join Leisa Foronda from Foothills Movement to wind down, tone up, and restore your body and spirit. Bring your own yoga mat. Weather permitting, class will be held on the outdoor deck. Registration required and space is limited. Email Allie at asnyder@polklibrary.org to reserve your spot.
Creating an Ecologically Sustainable Landscape
On Tuesday, April 9 at 2 p.m. at the Saluda Library, Lisa Wagner, plant ecologist, will teach us how to choose plants that naturally work together using a plant community approach, reflecting the aesthetic of natural Blue Ridge landscapes. By including a diversity of native plants, focusing on species that support native insects, birds, and other wildlife, your landscape can become not only sustainable, but attractive and easily maintained. Visit conservingcarolina.org/calendar to register for this event.
Taylor Swift Eras Party
On Friday, April 19 at 3:30 p.m. at the Saluda Library, celebrate the release of Taylor Swift’s newest album, The Tortured Poet’s Department. We’ll journey through all of the Eras of Taylor’s albums with themed activities, a photo booth, and more! Swifties of all ages are invited to this event.
Gentle Giants: All About Elephants
On Monday, April 22 at 4 p.m. at the Saluda Library, Vicki Leeds, an EleAmbassador for The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee, will share information about the sanctuary and stories of some of the elephants! This program is designed for kids ages 7 and up.
Teen Tastebud Takeover
On Wednesday, April 24 at 3:30 p.m. at the Columbus Library, learn how to make healthy snacks using our Charlie Cart mobile kitchen. This month, we will make black bean brownies. This program is for 6th-12th graders only, and was made possible by a generous grant from Carolina Foothills Foundation.
Jen Pace Dickenson is the Youth Services Librarian for Polk County Public Libraries. For information about the library’s resources, programs, and other services, visit polklibrary.org or call (828) 894-8721.
