Different venue, same result.

For the second time in five days, Polk County battled East Henderson’s girls soccer team to a draw, matching the Eagles 3-3 Monday in the Wolverines’ home opener.

The outcome remained the same, but the manner in which it was reached did vary from the teams’ 2-2 deadlock on Friday. In that tie, Polk County (0-0-2) often played the role of the pursuer, rallying twice from one-goal deficits.

It was the Eagles’ turn Monday to chase, with East Henderson (0-0-3) fighting back from an early two-goal hole and then scoring late to earn the split.

The match could not have started on a better note for Polk County. Gabby Savaia scored twice in the first 10 minutes, her first goal coming on a hard drive from the top of the penalty area set up by Caroline Taylor’s push into the box. Less than two minutes later, Savaia struck again, this time receiving a nice cross from Elena Carroll after she dribbled down the left flank, cut inside a defender and slipped her cross to Savaia. The sophomore easily found the net to give Polk a 2-0 lead.

East freshman Diane Villa delivered the Eagles’ first goal with an solid individual effort, dribbling past a pair of Polk defenders to set up a 1-on-1 effort against Wolverine goalkeeper Maggie Johnson. Johnson charged off her line and slid to stop Villa, but she was able to just chip the ball over Johnson to cut the Wolverine lead in half.

The Eagles then evened the match at 2-2 as another freshman, Meagan Porter, connected on a long drive from the right wing with five minutes left in the half.

The Wolverines, though, re-took the lead just before the half as Taylor found the net on her own lengthy effort, lifting a shot from deep on the left flank that settled into the right corner of the goal, giving Polk a 3-2 advantage.

That one-goal margin stood for nearly all the second half, the Wolverine defense and Johnson turning aside every East chance. Polk had scoring opportunities of its own but could never get a solid shot on goal, just missing the net with a couple of chances. That proved deciding when Porter again found the net from deep on the right side, this time on a free kick with 5:56 remaining.

Polk County is set to return to the road on Thursday, traveling to North Henderson.
