TRYON—Community members can show their support for a good cause during an annual fundraising project of the Rotary Club of Tryon, the Gourmet Nut Sale. Gourmet snacks from Plantation Peanuts out of Wakefield, Virginia are available for purchase at Tryon IGA on Wednesdays through the end of the month. 

All proceeds from the sale will go to the Rotary Club of Tryon Foundation to fund numerous worthwhile projects through the grant-giving process. Over the years, the Rotary Club of Tryon Foundation has granted thousands of dollars to organizations close to home and overseas, such as Rise Against Hunger, Reading is Fundamental, TubaChristmas, Polio Plus and Project Dignity WNC. The organization has also donated tens of thousands of dollars to scholarships for young people.

Snacks for sale during the fundraiser include salted and unsalted peanuts, chocolate-covered peanuts and peanut brittle, which are perfect for gifting this holiday season.

“The Thermal Belt Rotary Club originally started the nut sale, and when they disbanded, the Tryon Rotary took over,” said Carol Browning, a past-president of Rotary. “The program was started by Thermal Belt Rotary member Ray Mclees, who was so dedicated to the cause that he earned the nickname ‘Peanut Man’. The Tryon Rotary is glad to continue this tradition.”

Rotarians will work the Tryon IGA table in two-hour shifts during December, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. every Wednesday. The gourmet nuts will also be available at the 50th anniversary of the Community Chorus Christmas Concert on December 10 at Polk County High School.
