TRYON—The Tryon History Museum has received a generous grant from the Polk County Community Foundation in support of the Tales of Tryon.

The popular lecture series is presented by the museum six to eight times per year. These presentations focus on movements, causes, characters and slices of life in Tryon and western North Carolina. They are always well-received and well-attended.

Recent topics have included:

• A Walk on the Eastside of Tryon by Dr. Warren Carson, Carolina Trustee Professor Emeritus of African-American Studies at USC Upstate
• Reconstruction’s Ragged Edge: Post Civil War Politics in the Southern Mountains by Dr. Stephen Nash, Assistant Professor of History, East Tennessee State University
• Growing up in Tryon in the 1950s by Dr. Bill McCall and Hub Arledge
• Tryon Architects & Their Buildings by Dean Trakas, AIA
• The Indians, the Hunters, and the Plantations by Dr. Milton Ready, Professor Emeritus of History, UNC Asheville
• Rosenwald Schools in Polk County & Western NC by Dr. Tom Hanchett, Retired Staff Historian at the Levine Museum of the New South, Charlotte NC

The Tales of Tryon have been produced since 2019, through the generosity of the Polk County Community Foundation. The Tales are a community event—educational as well as social in nature. As a rule, questions remain for the speakers after the hour is over and he/she remains to mingle with the attendees while they renew acquaintances, make new friends and better acquaint themselves with the museum and its mission.
