As sweltering dog days of summer settle in for an extended visit, lightning cracks night skies, thunder grumbles low in the throat on the mountains. Sleepless in Saluda: that’s me at 12:30 a.m. After the clock numbers keep ticking on, 1:30 creeps around. Still sleepless. 

Waiting for rain, I finally give up and roll myself out of a comfy bed, figuring I’ll get up long enough to wear myself out enough before retrying for a snooze. Luckily power’s still on, thank goodness, no trees down on the car, at least not yet. The good thing is the blue rain barrel gets refilled. Plus, there’ll be a respite from toting water jugs to the garden. Thank you, Mother Nature. 

The kitchen night light is a warm friendly glow in the darkness. Pleasant breezes flow through inside—no AC needed. Bad girl I am, there’s a toasted biscuit in hand for the thunder/lighting show going on. Sometimes you just gotta have a biscuit in the wee hours! Let’s face it, a biscuit brings back memories of floured hands, rolling pins, delicious smells. Over the summer, there’s been a lot more veggies and hardly any bread around here, so I figure it’s a hard-earned treat. Excuses, excuses, right? 

One good thing after all that early-morning partying and light show, going back to bed looked better. So I crawled back in, listened to rain songs and definitely snored after all that! Or maybe it was distant thunder–I’ll never tell. 

Fun (and free!) things going on in and around town: Saluda Train Tales at Historic Saluda Depot &  Museum is July 28, 7 p.m. with Tom Jepsen speaking about railroad telegraphy. Also, enjoy musings under the moon and celebration of the ukulele (bring yours!) at Saluda Moon Glass courtyard from 6-7:30 p.m. on July 29. Enjoy the monthly art pop-up show with live music at Green River Brew Depot on July 30 from 1-5. The Rich Nelson Band will give a free concert on August 4, 7-9 p.m. at McCreery Park. (Bring your own chairs for outside events)  

Don’t forget to join Saluda Community Table on July 26, 5:30-7 p.m. at Saluda Fire Hall; I can promise there’s great conversation and food! Bring your own plate/utensils—donations always appreciated. Plus there’s live music.  Potluck/bingo night is July 31, 6 p.m. at Saluda Center; bring a side dish or dessert to share—main dish provided. 

Mark calendars for “Walks in the Woods” with Saluda Community Land Trust (SCLT); the next walk is to the “Missing 40”  August 6. Meet at Saluda Library parking lot at 2 p.m. Support our Saluda Senior Center and have fun at the same time! Tickets on sale now for the annual gala fundraiser with wine and gourmet fare on August 6 from 6-9 p.m. This event benefits the nonprofit center which receives no funding from the county or city, so it depends on donations and volunteers  to keep operating.
