The Town of Tryon’s Parks Committee is making upgrades to Woodland Park with a focus on improving the park entrance at the rear of the IGA parking lot to make it more attractive.

“We’re trying to focus your eye more on the entrance to the park rather than the dumpsters,” says Vard Henry, a member of the Tryon Parks Committee. “The purpose is to make it more appealing to people, to invite them in and that will get more people into Woodland Park.”

The project involves clearing out brush, weeds and debris and then planting native trees, shrubs and perennials.

“We are in the process now of trying to locate appropriate plants and we’re hoping to get this done by the end of March,” says Henry.

She says funding for the plants is coming from a Parks Committee fund and a Polk County Appearance Commission grant, and the labor is being provided by volunteers. Volunteers have long maintained Woodland Park and Henry hopes attracting more visitors to the park will also attract more volunteers.

The town established Woodland Park in the 1980s. The 16-acre park includes walking trails, a stream and a wide variety of trees and plants. It’s located behind the shopping district between IGA and Dollar General and between Gillette Woods and Chestnut St., with entrances on Chestnut St. and at the rear of the IGA parking lot.
