Upstairs Artspace is pleased to be open to the public with two new exhibitions. In addition, a virtual tour of Jane Nodine’s work is on the website, and she will also be greeting guests in person Thursday July 23^rd at 1:00 p.m.

Jane Nodine started making art in March in response to the pandemic when states ordered people to stay home and businesses to close. “It was a way to cope, to express fear of the virus, and eventually, to celebrate the hopes of life and a future,” she explains. The achievement of her concentrated effort is amazing — nearly 30 works. Some paintings depict a layer of shriveled texture that is overtaken by rich colors seeping up and around to drown out the negative. Nodine’s message: “We will prevail!”

Still Life offers expanded interpretations of an art genre that dates back to the Middle Ages, and even earlier. Many of the show’s artists enjoy turning heads by creating outside the box. They are: Michael Brodeur and Nancy Jaramillo, painting; Jo Carol Mitchell-Rogers, photography; Steven Chapp, monoprint, etching; David Yaghjian, painting; Ursula Gullow, painting; Arden Cone, painting. Each of the artists has exhibited previously at the Upstairs; each is well established and highly praised by private collectors and institutions alike.
