Tryon agrees to spend $86K paving Hogback Mountain Road

TRYON—After as much as 25 years, the Town of Tryon has agreed to repave Hogback Mountain Road. 

Tryon Town Council met Tuesday and heard from street supervisor Jody Morse, who said the town received three bids from paving contractors to pave from Embury Street to where the state takes over the road maintenance. 

Morse recommended Darrell Price, with Price Paving out of Mill Spring for $86,000. 

Morse said Price Paving can start within a month, if not before. 

Commissioner Bill Crowell asked if the town has the paving of Hogback Mountain Road in the budget. Tryon Mayor Alan Peoples answered that it is included in this year’s budget.  

Price gave bids on milling the road at $94,000 or taking out the bad spots and patching them at $86,000. 

After hearing from fire chief James “Tank” Waters, who said the town would be better by digging out than milling because of water damage, commissioners decided to go with the $86,000 bid.  

“I’m happy with Price (Paving),” Crowell said. “They are local. They’ve done us well.” 

Crowell also said the reason Hogback Mountain Road is in bad shape is because of work the state has done on the road with heavy trucks using it. 

Morse said the road was last paved 20-25 years ago and it has lasted that long.
