Landrum City Council met Tuesday and decided to take over the maintenance of the cemetery, located off Rutherford Road near downtown.

Mayor Briggs was involved with the group that has maintained the cemetery for the last 33 years or so. The Landrum Cemetery Perpetual Care Association was started by a group of 15 couples that were not satisfied with the state of the Landrum cemetery and deemed it to be in need of serious maintenance.  The committee decided to take the cemetery maintenance into their own hands and also held different fundraising efforts to pay for the expenses.

“For the past 33 years a group of individuals have been taking care of the Landrum cemetery. We have raised money for the cemetery and maintained it, but we are getting older, the Landrum cemetery is owned by the city of Landrum and we have worked out a transfer agreement,” Briggs said. The committee raises money with an annual fundraiser; we (the city) will continue that, the maintenance expenses will come out of that money.

The city of Landrum shares its deepest appreciation to the Landrum Cemetery Perpetual Care Association for its continued care and maintenance for the Landrum cemetery,” Briggs said.

The rest of the City Council and audience gave a standing ovation to the representatives of the committee that were present during the meeting.
