A group of Polk County High School AP Chemistry students spent Saturday at the annual Chemistry First Day at UNC Asheville.
Tana Harris, Caleb Potter, Grant Wooten and Daniela Santibanez got to experience firsthand a college-level lab involving an unknown identification via precipitation, halogen exchange and a quantitative titration.
The four also got to tour the chemistry department’s undergraduate research facilities and learn about the unique scholarship opportunities the department has for chemsitry majors.
“I encourage my students to take advantage of this opportunity to help them narrow their college and career choice, by showing them what a college science department is like,” said PCHS chemistry teacher Leslie Rhinehart. “The amazing scholarship opportunities that UNCA has for chemistry majors is also good for the students to consider.”
