Polk Trails Committee warns residents to use caution

TRYON – A tornado that came through downtown Tryon and West Lakeshore Drive of Lake Lanier Oct. 8 did not spare Woodland Park.

Woodland Park is located off Chestnut Street, which is off Melrose Avenue. The tornado did significant damage to trees along the trail.

The Polk Trails Committee has asked the public to use extreme caution and critical thinking if visiting Woodland Park.

The committee said Hurricane Nate caused a lot of damage at the park with fallen tree debris now covering a large part of the trail system.

“A lot of work will need to happen to clear up the trails, so stay alert for upcoming workdays if the Town of Tryon wishes to use us as volunteers to help out,” stated a notice sent by the committee on Friday, Oct. 13.

The tornado, which struck on Sunday, Oct. 8 around 5:45 p.m. was deemed an EF1 by the National Weather Service.

The Town of Tryon declared a state of emergency. The most critically affected areas were Pacolet Street and Melrose Avenue in Tryon and the 3^rd Basin area of Lake Lanier. There was significant damage from falling trees and wind to structures and vehicles.
