Ms. Bright and Mrs. Bradley’s first grade classes visited the Saluda Fire Department on Nov. 29. Nicholas Edwards, Dylan Ward, Will Justice and Eric Shumaker gave us a wonderful tour and explained what it was like to work as a firefighter. They pulled out all the stops, including cutting a metal chair in half with a hydraulic cutting tool to show how they cut cars when people are trapped inside. Also, they let them go through the wooden maze used for training.
They showed many different pieces of equipment, explained uses and also let them get on a fire truck. We timed Will Justice as he got into all protective gear in 90 seconds.
First grade is learning to read maps and Captain Edwards explained maps in detail and how they are used for responding to people’s homes every day.
Also, he talked about how important going to school was and how they use math and science every single day in their job.
