Copelof was honoring fallen service members

To the editor:

For the last four years, the Polk County Democratic Women’s Club has held a flag raising ceremony on Memorial Day to remember and honor our fallen military service members.

Captain Maureen Copelof’s (USN Ret.) participation in the event was not to garner votes, (she already has our support) nor was it a campaign event. Therefore, it was appropriate for her to be in her uniform for this ceremony.

It is unfortunate that Mr. Sutherland and Mr. Livingston undertook to disparage a 30-year Navy veteran for her observance of Memorial Day and for taking the time to discuss the importance of the day with our Women’s Club.

Retired military personnel may wear the uniform on holidays honoring the military.  It’s entirely appropriate.
