Landrum City Council approves quilters’ request
At the Landrum City Council meeting Jan. 13, council unanimously approved a request by the Landrum Quilters to help sponsor the quilt show scheduled for June 11-13. The Landrum Quilters requested $1,260.70 to help the organization buy advertising in local and regional publications to promote the show. Marilyn Hagopian presented the request to council, saying that other area quilt shows had experienced a drop in attendance but Landrum’s show had not, drawing 1,200 visitors last year.

Landrum City Council issues two proclamations
Landrum’s mayor, Robert Briggs, issued two proclamations at the Jan. 13 city council meeting. The first was read to the family of Pierce Cannon, owner and founder of Cannon and Sons Mortuary, who passed away Dec. 22, 2014. Briggs praised Cannon for his commitment to the Landrum area and called upon all citizens to remember him for his contributions to the community. The second proclamation was to recognize Shannon Dotson, a member of the Landrum Fire Department, who, on Dec. 18, 2014, acted swiftly to perform CPR to save the life of a Landrum resident.

Polk County Recreation volleyball sign-ups
Volleyball sign-ups for girls ages 7-18 have begun at the Polk County Recreation Department. The league is adding a new age group of 15-18 this spring. Sign-ups can be done until Feb. 6 for $35. Registration forms can be found on the bulletin board in front of Stearns Gym or at www.polknc.org/departments/recreation.

Art room completed at Polk County Recreation
With the help of the Polk County Maintenance Department, a remodeling project to create an art room at the recreation department was recently completed. Concrete was poured as well as sanding, painting, baseboards and electrical outlets installed. With upcoming furnishing of the space, the recreation department hopes to have the art room in use this spring. The recreation department has an after-school program, a school’s out program and summer camp.

School’s Out to open Jan. 19-20
With Polk County Schools closed on Monday, Jan. 19 and Tuesday, Jan. 20, the Polk County Recreation Department is open for its School’s Out program. On Monday the recreation department will be taking a field trip to Paradise Lanes in Spartanburg for an additional cost of $9 and Tuesday the recreation department will stay at Stearns Gym for a scavenger hunt and games. Martin Luther King Jr. celebration Saturday, Jan. 17
The community is invited to attend the Thermal Belt Friendship Council’s annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. celebration on Saturday, Jan. 17 at the Tryon Fine Arts Center from 6-8 p.m. Willie Ratchford, executive director of Charlotte’s Community Relations Committee, will be the keynote speaker. Refreshments will be provided by Impeccable Tastes. The program is free and made possible by the Free Community Event Grant from the Polk County Community Foundation.

Polk sheriff’s office to purchase new vehicle
During the Polk County Commissioner’s Jan. 5 meeting, commissioners approved a budget amendment for the sheriff’s office to purchase a new vehicle and donate a retired vehicle to the administration department. The county is taking money from insurance proceeds from a totaled administration SUV to give the sheriff’s office $30,000 for the purchase. The sheriff’s department was not sure last week what type of vehicle it would purchase.
