Removing Bradford Pears at courthouse
Published 4:32 pm Monday, November 12, 2012
The Bradford Pear trees along Courthouse Street and Ward Street will be removed on Monday, Nov. 12 and Tuesday, Nov. 13.
The Town of Columbus is forced to undertake this removal due to recent storms that brought down significant branches and limbs across several parking areas on Courthouse Street. No persons or property were in jeopardy when the limbs fell, but a significant risk existed if they remained. Polk County government requested the trees be removed as well.
The town is working with County Extension Director John Vining to ensure appropriate trees are planted back in the area. Current plans are to replant the area with sugar maple trees similar to those planted shortly after World War I in honor of veterans of that war. These trees should be planted within the next month.
