Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

We have four locations where we pick up recyclable items. All times are from 7 am to noon. The Harmon Field location for mobile recycling on Mondays is now behind the Tryon Arts and Crafts Building—take the turn by the tennis courts and find Rich Robinson by the basketball court. On Tuesdays, Rich can be found at his same Saluda location, but recyclers should cross the bridge and head west on Rt. 176 to the bottom of the hill. Take the right, stay right, and see him on your left at the top of the hill. Wednesday pickup is at Green Creek by the Fire Station. Thursday is behind the old museum in Columbus at the south end of Ward St.

Apart from corrugated cardboard and paper, we take containers that hold food or household products. Plastic containers with the numbers 1-7 in a triangle on the bottom are acceptable. Bottles or jars are fine. All other plastic, like coat hangers, bags, packing, bubble wrap, implements, or styrofoam, is not recyclable. Glass other than bottles/jars is not recyclable. Examples are mirror glass, window glass, drink glasses, ceramics, etc.

We also take aluminum drink cans. All other cans (cat food cans, steel cans, etc.) go in with the plastic. Paper can include books, magazines, and cardboard that is not corrugated, like cereal boxes.

Metal gadgets, aluminum pie pans, tin foil, and other metals are recyclable at the dump but not at the truck. Any container that has held poisons, gas, oil, pesticides, herbicides, or anti-freeze is not recyclable.

We also take all light bulbs, including neon, and batteries, except car batteries, which have to be taken to the dump.

One thing that helps the process is to have your items separated into categories so that they can be dumped into the bins and not slow down those behind you rushing to work or appointments.

We’ve had some challenges with equipment breakdowns, but we’re on sound footing now. Thank you to all of you who recycle, many of you for ten years or more. You’ve made my job a joy.
