Republican Jefferson Griffin conceded Wednesday to Democratic incumbent Allison Riggs in the race for a North Carolina Supreme Court seat following a federal judge’s ruling that thousands of disputed ballots must be counted, finalizing the last race in November’s general election.
Griffin, who lost to Riggs by 734 votes statewide, said he would not appeal the decision by U.S. District Judge Richard Myers. The ruling ordered the State Board of Elections to certify Riggs as the winner of the eight-year term.
“While I do not fully agree with the District Court’s analysis, I respect the court’s holding — just as I have respected every judicial tribunal that has heard this case,” Griffin said in a statement. “I will not appeal the court’s decision.”
Myers delayed enforcing his order for seven days to give Griffin time to appeal. With the concession, Riggs’s election can now be finalized.
Riggs is one of two Democrats on the seven-member court. Her term runs through 2028.
