SALUDA—The Mountain Song Community Chorus, based in Saluda, has announced a series of three free spring concerts scheduled to take place in the area, including during the Saluda Arts Festival, where they will be performing “Great American Jazz Standards.”
The first performance will take place on Thursday, May 1, at 7 p.m. at the Rutherfordton Presbyterian Church, located at 252 N. Washington St., Rutherfordton. Then, on Sunday, May 4, at 4 p.m., the group will perform at the Saluda Inn Wedding Tent, located at 229 Greenville St. The third free performance will be held on Saturday, May 17, at 11 a.m. during the Saluda Arts Festival, in McCreery Park.
Founded three years ago by music director Mark Powers, who brings decades of choral leadership experience, the chorus has become a fixture in the local music scene.
“We are a joyful community chorus, a close-knit musical family that works hard to bring people together with inspiring and uplifting choral music,” Powers said.
Mountain Song performs an enjoyable repertoire and has members from all over the region, captivating audiences not only in Saluda but also in surrounding areas, including Hendersonville, Tryon, and Rutherfordton.
“We are only a short drive away from you. If you love to sing, come join our musical family.” Powers added.
The chorus welcomes all singers aged 16 and above, regardless of their ability to read music or perform solos. This openness fosters a nurturing environment where community members can come together to create harmonious music.
This year’s performances will feature a selection titled “The Great American Jazz Standards,” including beloved classics like “Unforgettable,” “Moon River,” and “New York, New York.” The concerts will also highlight special guest John Wilkinson, recognized as “Saluda’s Own Jazz Singer,” who has performed extensively with the Dick Goodwin Big Band out of Columbia, SC.
“At Mountain Song, we always look for music that will be a good fit for choral arrangements,” Powers shared. “We try to find music that appeals to an older generation but can be enjoyed by all ages.”
While all performances are free to the public, donations are graciously accepted to support our seasonal concerts and compensate the musicians. For additional information, visit mountainsong.info.
