SALUDA—In a heartfelt tribute to a remarkable woman, the Saluda Arts Festival and her descendants will celebrate the 170th anniversary of Madame Phoebia Cheek Sullivan’s birthday on Saturday, May 17, with a performance by renowned gospel singer Daryle Ryce.
Known as a divine healer, herbalist, and seer, Madame Sullivan’s legacy is deeply tied to the town of Saluda and is now being preserved with a park in her honor.
In 1947, Madame Sullivan founded the Sullivan Temple Missionary Baptist Church, an iconic structure that remains a significant landmark in the community today. This site is presently being transformed into Sullivan Memorial Park, Saluda’s Premier Reflective Sanctuary & Nature Center, spanning nearly 40 acres of breathtaking natural beauty. The park will feature an amphitheater, community gardens, a dog park, event spaces, nature trails, and a tranquil memorial, forming a serene connection between downtown Saluda and nearby Reclamation Park.
Christopher Jordan, a descendant of Madame Sullivan, noted the significance of his ancestor’s birthday.
“Madame Sullivan’s birthday was a grand occasion, with people traveling from across the country—entire congregations from places like New York and Washington—coming to honor her each May 15,” Jordan said. “We continue this celebration tradition at the Saluda Arts Festival, recognizing her lasting impact on our community and the world.”
The family has organized a performance at the Saluda Arts Festival that will showcase Ryce’s exceptional talent. Known for her silky voice and captivating performances, Ryce began her music career as a singer accompanying herself on piano and guitar. A Spartanburg native, she has graced the Midwest club circuit and gained recognition in Charlotte thanks to fellow artist Loonis McGlohon.
Ryce’s musical influences range from the timeless sounds of Ella Fitzgerald and Betty Carter to modern-day legends like James Taylor and Joni Mitchell.
“We are building something for Saluda,” added Jordan. “And in the process preserving the legacy of Madame Phoebia Sullivan and the land.”
