TRYON—When Helene hit in September, it eroded a site next to Vaughn Creek that was formerly used by Tryon residents as a dump site. Even though it hasn’t been in operation for many decades, glass, metals, and plastics take a long time to degrade, so these items were washed downstream and deposited on the Ziglar Field bank.

This field is often visited by people with dogs and, on occasion, families. The Tryon Parks Committee, along with some dedicated volunteers, spent two hours on Saturday cleaning the periphery of the field. It scooped up 14 tires, one collapsed barbecue grill, a muffler, a hot water heater and hundreds of pounds of debris. This is the third time volunteers have worked Vaughn Creek this year, from the culvert at Vaughn Creek Greenway to the open field at Ziglar.

The efforts were dovetailed with the Eastside Community of Tryon, who also worked along the roadways that serve their community.
