TRYON—The Tryon Arts & Crafts School recently announced the first of two Westside Mixer events for 2025, scheduled for April 11 from 6-9 p.m. The gathering promises an evening filled with music, crafts, food, and community spirit.

The April 11 mixer kicks off TACS’ 65th anniversary celebration. It emphasizes the school’s long-standing role as the community’s heritage educational hub while embracing contemporary art and craft practices.

The mixer will feature live music from an acclaimed bluegrass act, The Burnett Sisters Band from Boone. The event will also showcase a variety of youth crafts generously supported by the Polk County Community Foundation.

Food lovers are in for a treat as TACS will offer made-to-order dishes from their handcrafted open-flame grill, including Kicking’ Chicken Bowls and a selection of vegetarian options. As part of the school’s 65th Anniversary celebration, attendees can indulge in a complimentary birthday cake provided by Valhalla Cakes, free to all attendees.

A cash bar will serve beverages, including local beers, Biltmore wines, and non-alcoholic choices.

One of the highlights of the evening will be the Empty Bowls Throwdown, featuring talented local artisans, including Meghan Bernard, Austin Burns, Doug Dacey, Ann Gleason, Dee Lassiter, and Susan McDade. The beautifully crafted bowls will be available for purchase, with proceeds benefiting Thermal Belt Outreach, and can be enjoyed at their annual fall soup lunch event at Parker-Bins Vineyard.

Attendees will also be able to participate in various demonstrations showcasing the rich crafts traditions. Fiber arts demonstrations will include Priscilla Yeager’s weaving and Connie Brown’s quilting. For woodworking enthusiasts, Ray Buckmaster will demonstrate toymaking techniques. Additionally, Monica Stevenson will present photography demos, highlighting TACS’ new digital photography program.

Looking ahead, TACS is also preparing for the Tryon Toymakers Exhibition, set to open on May 1. This exciting show will include loans from Western Carolina University, the estate of Rick Dunn, and additional resources that celebrate the rich history of toy making.

The second and final mixer will take place on September 5. For more information, visit tryonartsandcrafts.org.
