Burn ban lifted for Polk County as Black Cove Complex wildfires increase containment

POLK COUNTY—In conjunction with the North Carolina Forest Service, the Polk County Fire Marshal’s Office lifted the county-wide burn ban on Wednesday April 2. 

Residents are advised to practice safety when burning. Officials state that it is still illegal to burn anything that isn’t natural vegetation and fines can still be issued for burning any illegal materials.

The Black Cove Fire is 3,502 acres in size and is at 97% containment. The Deep Woods Fire is 3,979 acres in size and is at 63% containment. The Fish Hook Fire is 199 acres in size and is 100% contained.

Should conditions worsen or become dry again, the burn ban will be reinstated and those who violate the ban may be subjected to a fine of $250.
