TRYON—Thursday, March 13, marked a special occasion at the Tryon Coffeehouse, as resident Ben Robinson celebrated his 83rd birthday surrounded by friends and the community he holds dear.

Born on March 13, 1942, in South Carolina, Ben was destined for a life of adventure. He attended the University of South Carolina before he answered the call of duty, serving in the U.S. Army. Ben’s two tours in Vietnam as a reconnaissance paratrooper showcased his calm leadership, which earned him immense respect among his fellow troops.

After his military service, the wilds of Alaska beckoned to him, and for 28 years, he called that rugged landscape home. Ben worked with the U.S. Forest Service while continuing to embark on remarkable global expeditions. Friends often describe him as a “wild child,” known for his spirited approach to life and his knack for having fun.

In between fire seasons, Ben traveled throughout the US and Latin America, where he navigated the Panama Canal. Another adventure in London introduced the unexpected challenge of a mandatory departure within two days due to his one-way ticket. Undeterred, Ben rented a motorcycle, despite never having ridden one before, and set off on a journey that meandered from the iconic Brandenburg Gate in Berlin to the streets of Algiers and Morocco.

Ben’s adventures didn’t stop there. He invested time volunteering at two kibbutzim in Israel and later returned to Alaska to join the oil pipeline work at the Arctic Circle. After winning a piece of land north of Fairbanks, he crafted a home (complete with a unique luxury outhouse) that featured stunning views of the Alaskan landscape.

Ben eventually settled in Marble, N.C., and quickly became known as a supportive neighbor and friend. Today, he lives in Tryon with his beloved furry companion, Luna.

As friends gathered to celebrate Ben Robinson’s milestone birthday, the sentiment was clear: Ben and Luna have touched the lives of many in Tryon. The Coffeehouse community takes pride in counting Ben Robinson among its cherished friends.
