Polk track and field athletes deliver solid effort in meet at Montreat

Polk County’s track and field athletes delivered several strong performances at Friday’s Swain County High School Invitational held at Montreat College.

In a meet featuring more than 20 schools from across Western North Carolina, the Wolverines secured multiple top-10 finishes and achieved an important milestone as all three girls relay teams qualified for the 1A West Regional scheduled for May.

Karsyn Huskey led the Polk County girls with a third-place finish in the 800-meter run, posting a time of 2:20.41. The girls 4×200-meter relay team earned the school’s highest finish of the day, taking second with a time of 1:53.58.

On the boys side, Khristian Littlejohn cleared 5-10 in the high jump to place third, while the boys 4×200-meter relay team finished fourth with a time of 1:38.17.

Other top performances for the Wolverines included fifth-place finishes in boys 4×400-meter relay (3:44.45) and 4×800-meter relay (9:24.77). Akeela Cunningham placed fifth in the girls shot put with a throw of 29-9, and Sofia Avellaneda took fifth in the pole vault, clearing 5-6.

Lorenzo Sanchez recorded Polk’s best individual track result in the boys running events, placing seventh in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 45.81. Nolan Simpson also earned a seventh-place finish in the boys triple jump with a distance of 36-1.

Danny Bradley posted a time of 23.97 in the 200-meter dash to place 14th, while Davis Young finished 12th in the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:02.69.

Polk County teams will be back in action on Saturday, competing in the Coach Odell Williams Raider Invitational at North Iredell High School in Statesville.
