N.C. Forest Service says five western counties under extreme fire danger
POLK COUNTY—Polk County remains at a high fire risk, according to the N.C. Forest Service. The NCFS says that five counties in WNC are currently under extreme fire danger due to dry, windy conditions.
Firefighting crews in Polk County recently successfully contained the 3910 fire near Tryon, which burned 619 acres earlier this month. Crews also worked a smaller fire on Tuesday in the Mill Spring area, which is now 100% contained.
A burn ban is currently in place for all of Polk County, which prohibits outdoor burning such as campfires, bonfires, and burning yard waste.
An analysis conducted by the North Carolina Drought Management Advisory Council revealed that several Western North Carolina counties face moderate drought conditions, including Polk, Henderson, and Rutherford counties.
Polk County is currently enduring one of its driest years on record, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor.
