A five-run first inning proved too much for Polk County to overcome Tuesday as the Wolverines suffered their first defeat of the season, falling 9-2 at Robbinsville in non-conference softball action.
The Black Knights (1-0) jumped on Polk County early, racing to a 5-0 advantage after one inning and extending that lead to 7-0 before the Wolverines could get on the scoreboard.
Polk County (4-1) broke through in the third inning. With one out, Tory Coile reached base on a dropped third strike to start the rally. Laney Littlefield then delivered an RBI double to put the Wolverines on the board, and Junie Mitchell followed with a run-scoring single to cut the deficit to 7-2.
That would be as close as Polk County would get, though, as Robbinsville added two more runs in the fourth inning to complete the scoring.
Mitchell finished 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Wolverines’ offense. Littlefield went 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI, while Sarah Vitale and Mia Bradley each added singles for Polk County.
The Wolverines will look to bounce back quickly as they travel to Cherryville on Thursday for another non-conference matchup.
