Notes from Polk’s February school board meeting

COLUMBUS—The Polk County Board of Education completed mandatory ethics and boardsmanship training during its February 10 work session at Stearns Education Center.
Board members must complete these training sessions every other year following their election. The sessions cover conflict of interest awareness, appropriate governance, board collaboration and specific legal requirements. Each member must complete 12 hours of training annually.
The board recently received the North Carolina School Board Association’s “Silver Bell” award for participation in board member training.
In other business:
- The board recognized Polk County Middle School Academically or Intellectually Gifted Teacher Jeanne Ferran for receiving the Janice Anderson Brumley Educational Grant for professional development.
- Accountability Coordinator Angela Dufford presented information about state School Report Cards. The board noted that detailed information on last year’s school performance is now available online.
- The board approved several overnight field trips, including Polk County High School’s participation in the HOSA State Leadership Conference and Polk County Elementary’s Trailblazers Outdoor Club trip to Nantahala National Forest for camping and nature study. Construction Technology students also received approval to attend the state Skills USA camp in Fayetteville later this fall.
- Several budget amendments were approved, along with a bid to repair storm drain issues at Saluda Elementary’s campus.
The next board meeting is scheduled for March 10 at Polk County High School.
