POLK COUNTY—United States Attorney Dena J. King announced on Wednesday, February 12, that she has stepped down from her role as the chief law enforcement officer for the Western District of North Carolina. The district covers covered 32 counties, including Polk.
“It has been a tremendous honor to serve the people of the Western District of North Carolina,” said King. “I’ve had the privilege of working alongside some of the most talented public servants who are dedicated to serving our communities with integrity, distinction, and excellence.”
Her departure marks the conclusion of a significant tenure during which she made history as the first person of color to hold the position. Nominated by President Biden on September 28, 2021, and confirmed by the United States Senate on November 19, she was sworn in on November 29 of the same year.
Her office prioritized various initiatives, including protecting civil rights, enhancing public safety, and combatting various forms of fraud. King’s leadership also saw a focus on disrupting drug and gun trafficking networks and protecting vulnerable populations from exploitation.
One of her hallmark achievements was the formation of WDNC’s first-ever Civil Rights Team. This initiative aimed to enforce civil rights laws, prosecute offenders of civil rights violations, and ensure fair access to justice. King emphasized community engagement to raise awareness of civil rights issues and encourage reporting of violations.
“Serving as U.S. Attorney has given me the privilege of working alongside our dedicated federal, state, and local law enforcement partners on prosecutions, crime prevention efforts, and outreach initiatives,” said King, reflecting on her time in office.
She sincerely thanked all law enforcement personnel for their commitment to public safety and justice in the community.
First Assistant U.S. Attorney Lawrence J. Cameron will serve as Acting U.S. Attorney until a replacement is named.
