Did my husband cross a line?

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Dear Aunty Pam,

I am so mad at my husband that I could throttle him. He says I’m overreacting (he always says this when it’s his fault), so I’ll let you be the judge.

I recently had my gallbladder out, and it was a pretty tough operation. When I was in recovery but still out of it, ‘Larry’ took a photo of me and put it on Facebook, telling everybody I’d had surgery but was now recovering. I am absolutely mortified.

I was lying on my back with my mouth half open, giving me a big double chin. I am so embarrassed to have that photo floating around in cyberspace; plus, I told him it’s not his place to tell anybody about my personal health. He says our friends wanted to know and everybody was praying for me, so he was letting them know.

We’ve been fighting all week about this. Am I wrong to be upset?

Signed,

Dear WW,

I have seen precisely those sorts of photos all over Facebook of people waving, wearing the plastic shower cap and about to be wheeled into surgery, people giving a thumbs up with a leg in a cast, and like you, still deeply under the effects of sedation in recovery.

I’m not quite sure what possesses folks to post such intimate photographs of themselves, but I have told Paul that if I’m ever in hospital and he EVER sneaks a photo of me going in, or out, of surgery, I’ll come after him with a gym sock full of quarters.

What Larry did violated every ounce of trust and respect between spouses. Spot on: he had no business proclaiming a word about your personal health, and to take that photo, clearly showing you in the most unflattering pose possible, also smacks of something darker, if not outright cruel.

As soon as you heal up and hair over, Aunty Pam strongly suggests a few bucks spent in couple counseling to get to the bottom of this. It’s also possible Larry may be so clueless that he truly has no idea he stepped over the line. And if that’s the case, welp, I’d look into a shock collar.

Cheers, dears!!

Aunty Pam
