This week at The Tryon Theatre is “Moana 2,” the sequel to 2016’s “Moana.” Like its predecessor, this film is focused on the eponymous Moana, a young, driven woman in a magic and myth-filled imagining of Polynesia. Walt Disney Animation Studios produced the “Moana” films, bringing her sun-filled tropical world to life in brightly sharp animation and creating a visual feast of creativity and color.
The frequent musical numbers interspersed throughout the narrative complement the film’s animation. Catchy and energetic songs keep the film humming along and may have you humming as well. The film’s voice talent is solid and well-suited to the comedic nature of many of the songs, injecting humor and heart into each number.
While the first film is certainly recommended viewing for introducing the world and characters, any viewers unfamiliar with the story can likely get away with only watching this self-contained adventure.
On the Polynesian island of Motunui, the tribal people live in harmony with one another and their ecosystem. Their religion is centered on worshipping nature and the veneration of the gods that still walk their world. Moana is the headstrong daughter of the island chieftain, who longs for a life of adventure and excitement on the seas. The first film finds Motunui struck by a mysterious blight, and Moana sets out on a fantastical quest to restore the “heart of the sea” and save her people.
During her journey, certain key companions are established: two animals (a pig and a rooster) and one demigod of wind and sea, Maui, a shapeshifter who usually defaults to the form of a burly and goofy tribal warrior. “Moana 2” finds this ragtag team reunited as they set out on a new adventure, with new perils and new magic on the horizon.
Like most animated fare, this film is intended squarely for a younger audience. It reinforces certain virtues for their young viewers: bravery, curiosity, and community. Good children’s art should always entertain but ultimately teach, too, and this film incorporates many moments for ethical enrichment.
Ultimately, “Moana 2” is an easy film to enjoy for any attendee, regardless of age. The animation is beautiful, with the rendering of the sea and its teeming marine life being worth the price of admission alone. However, the appeal does not stop at the visual artistry. Moana herself is a capable and likable protagonist; her earnest curiosity is the cause and solution of all her troubles, and her joyous outlook makes for an infectiously happy time.
We hope you will join us soon for all the laughter and song!
