Polk County capped its busy holiday schedule Saturday with a championship showing at one of the area’s top tournaments.
The Wolverines won the Enka Duals, going 4-0 and defeating two of the region’s top teams in the process. Polk now owns a 27-4 record in dual matches this season.
In pool matches, the Wolverines easily defeated Asheville, 67-12, and A.C. Reynolds, 59-10, advancing to the Gold pool.
In the opening Gold round, Polk defeated Enka 47-26, the win believed to be the first time the Wolverines have ever beaten a Jets squad. Enka won the first five matches, building a 26-0 advantage, before Polk swept the final nine matches to claim the team win.
That win led to a meeting with Robbinsville, a battle of two of the state’s top 1A squads. The Knights opened an 18-0 lead and still led 30-17 before Jacob Ed’s major decision at 150 kicked off a string of five consecutive Wolverine wins, the last being Chester Wilson’s victory at 190 pounds that sealed the match win for the Wolverines.
Polk would have next faced conference rival R-S Central, but the teams opted not to wrestle that match given their regular-season showdown set for Tuesday. With Robbinsville nipping R-S Central 38-37 in Gold matches, that left Polk as the meet champion.
The Wolverines finished 14-2 in matches held over the Christmas break, taking third place in the Carolina Clash Super Duals and winning the Enka event.
