MILL SPRING—The inaugural Tryon International Disc Golf Classic will take place on August 17 and August 18, promising an exciting opportunity for disc golf enthusiasts to showcase their skills. Presented by Innova Disc Golf and Disc Golf United, this event will feature three courses at the Tryon International Equestrian Center, located at 25 International Boulevard.

The history of disc golf dates back to 1926 when Canadian kids invented the game of “Tin Lid Golf” using flying discs. However, it wasn’t until the early 1960s that disc golf began to gain recognition as a legitimate sport, with the first specialized disc golf course being designed and installed in 1975 in Pasadena, California.

This marked the beginning of the Professional Disc Golf Association, which oversees top-level competitions and the TIEC Disc Golf Classic. The PDGA now boasts 150,000 members and has seen a doubling of active tournament participants in recent years.
