Drivers asked to use caution after heavy rain, multiple accidents in area
POLK COUNTY–A tractor-trailer overturned on I-26 today, worsening traffic delays along the interstate and throughout much of Columbus.
Columbus Fire Department responded to the single motor accident near mile-marker 63 West, where the tractor-trailer flipped on its side. Emergency crews arrived on the scene at 2:18 p.m., as response was delayed due to heavy rain and traffic already being backed up.
Captain Dylan Priester with the Columbus Fire Department said both westbound lanes were closed while the tractor-trailer was uprighted.
Traffic was already slowed throughout the area due to rain, wet roads and multiple other accidents. At one point, traffic was backed up on I-26 Westbound all the way to Landrum. One lane of traffic was re-opened at 3:40 p.m.
Drivers should use caution and expect heavy traffic while firefighters are still in the area.
According to Captain Priester, there have been four separate motor vehicle accidents on I-26 today.
It is unknown whether there were any injuries at this time.
