CAMPOBELLO – The entrance to Old Asheville Highway from Highway 176 is currently roped off due to a damaged bridge. Council members announced at the monthly town council meeting on Monday night that Old Asheville Highway would be closed immediately and until further notice.
The bridge on Old Asheville Highway is a danger to drivers due to weathering and the weight of construction vehicles traveling daily across the bridge. Council has decided to wait to complete the repairs until after the construction in the Cane Creek subdivision has been completed.
The excessive back and forth travel across the bridge has caused the structure to settle lower than when it was originally built. Conditions of the bridge could become hazardous for people to continue traveling over until it is fully repaired. Continued usage of the bridge may also result in additional issues and more expensive maintenance.
City council, along with Campobello Police Chief McNeill, shared that the road will be closed until the new housing subdivision is complete. They will begin planning on fixing the issue once heavy machinery and trucks will not be using the bridge as frequently.
Mayor Wildes shared that he and the council want to fix the bridge correctly but must wait for the subdivision to be completed.
