Polk County’s stay in the state 1A girls basketball playoffs lasted one night. 

But what a night it was. 

The 25th-seeded Wolverines pushed 8th-seeded Lincoln Charter into overtime before falling 78-73 in first-round action in Denver. 

Lincoln Chater (16-9) led 67-64 in the final seconds, but the Eagles fouled Polk freshman Olivia Overholt on a 3-point attempt as time ran out. Overholt stepped to the foul line and calmly hit all three free throws to force the extra period. 

The Wolverines (6-18) reached overtime despite plenty of adversity. Fouls plagued Polk, with four players eventually fouling out. The Wolvernes also played without senior Ansley Lynch, who missed the game due to a stomach virus. 

Marissa Twitty led Polk County with 14 points, with Overholt adding 13 points and six rebounds. Senior Mariah Overholt had 12 points and eigh rebounds, with Tori Thompson scoring nine points and handing out five assists. 

Sara Muse had eight points, with Kristen Hall, Jen Guerrero and Rachael Davis each scoring five points. Emmie McDowell added three points for Polk.
