Enka blanks Wolverines in soccer season opener

It was not quite the 2018 debut that Polk County soccer coach Josh Trejo wanted to see.
Then again, it has not been quite the preseason that Trejo preferred, either.
Enka tallied twice in the first 10 minutes Monday and pulled away to a 6-0 win over the Wolverines in both teams’ season opener at G.M. Tennant Stadium.
The Jets built a 4-0 lead at the half, then added a pair of second-half goals as Polk County lost starting goalkeeper Jonah Wyatt to an injury late in the first half.
The Wolverines trailed 3-0 at that point, and never managed to generate an extended offensive threat throughout the night, firing just three shots on goal in the match.
“I’m disappointed, but not dejected,” Trejo said. “We haven’t had the time to prepare between the weather and the heat. Tonight was really about seeing how far along we are.
“For the first 15 or 20 minutes, I felt like we could hang with them. After that, our energy dropped, and we got tired and starting making bad decisions. But at the end of the day, we had some positives.”
The Wolverines returned to the field Wednesday, visiting Crest for a nonconference clash.
