Local fire departments to honor 9/11 victims at Stearns Park

Almost exactly 15 years after the first plane hit the World Trade Center in New York City, area firefighters in full turn out gear will be standing in downtown Columbus to honor the almost 3,000 people who died.
The Columbus Fire Department will be teaming up with other local fire departments on Sunday, Sept. 11 to honor victims who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001.
Firefighters plan to dress in full turn out gear and stand at the corner of Stearns Park in downtown Columbus for much of the day.
Firefighters are scheduled to be in downtown Columbus from 8:45 a.m.-2:30 p.m. on Sunday.
The Columbus Fire Department timed the memorial to coincide with the time the first plane struck the towers.
American Airlines Flight 11, which had 92 people on board, left from Boston’s Logan International Airport en route to Los Angeles at 7:59 a.m. on Sept. 11, 2001 and crashed into floors 93-99 of the North Tower at 8:46 a.m.
At 9:03 a.m. hijackers of United Airlines Flight 175 crashed into floors 77-85 of the South Tower of the World Trade Center. Flight 175 had 65 people on board and also took off from Boston on its way to Los Angeles.
At 9:37 a.m., hijackers on board of American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the western portion of the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. All people on board the plane as well as 125 people inside the Pentagon. Flight 77 had 64 people on board and took off from Dulles International Airport outside of Washington, D.C. headed to Los Angeles.
At 10:03 a.m. United Airlines Flight 93 crashed in a field in Somerset County, Pennsylvania after passengers and crew members mounted an attempt to retake the plane. The plane was hijacked and passengers and crew members learned about the earlier attacks in New York and Washington. There were 44 people aboard and all died in the crash. Flight 93 was supposed to depart at 8 a.m., but did not take off until 8:41 a.m., just before the first attack took place. Flight 93 took off from Newark International Airport en route to San Francisco.
The 9/11 attacks killed almost 3,000 people that day and injured more than 6,000. While most of the victims were civilians, 343 firefighters and 71 law enforcement officers died at the World Trade Center and on the ground in New York City.
