The beast within

Published 10:00 pm Thursday, July 28, 2016

From the beginning of time, man has found a way or an excuse to maim, kill or murder.  The only thing different in today’s world is that new reasons keep arising to justify their actions: religion, ideology, bias, ethnicity, justice, love, hate, etc. I could fill this whole page with reasons why the human race readily calls on the beast within our hearts.

Over the past few weeks I have told the story of Soldier and before that Foreman, the injured Boxer.

Soldier’s chemo isn’t working and his tumor has grown. The vets believe it’s because his immune system has been damaged from his traumatic beginnings. I am sending him to Upstate for radiation treatments along with many prayers.

Foreman, the beautiful brindle Boxer, was brought to the shelter on March 9. His owner didn’t want him any longer because he was damaged goods. Foreman had punctures on his face and trauma on his head from being struck with a blunt object. He had lost his vision and it was feared we would have to take one of his eyes. I was called on from the beginning and I offered whatever was needed to help this poor boy.

Understandably Foreman was fearful of his new surroundings and displayed what I call “protective aggression.” With some diligent work and much love and caring, Foreman learned to trust again and return the love he received.

Eye drops and medicines were used for his eyes and miraculously the swelling subsided and his vision began to return. Thank you, Bonnie Brae. You cannot be around Foreman and not smile, witnessing his enthusiastic love of life, just as Soldier exhibits, and like Soldier, Foreman has recently been diagnosed with cancer.

Denise and Richard had heard the story of Foreman and drove two hours to meet him. I was lucky enough to be on the scene when Foreman was brought out to meet them.  Foreman waked up to Denise and gave her every bit of Boxer joy and love he had in his body. Except for the age difference, it reminded me very much of Soldier and Lily’s first meeting.

Foreman is now in his forever home and his new family is well aware of his cancer.  They have vowed that Foreman will get the best care and he’ll live the rest of his life (however long that is), knowing nothing but love.

God sends us so many signs of what is needed to peacefully live together. Soldier and Foreman are but two examples of God’s wisdom. Instead of being so quick to seek out the beast within our hearts, perhaps we should try to look at the heart within the beasts.

God bless and thanks for listening.
