Polk  tennis coach Joel Picher said his Lady Wolverines took it hard to the net in nail biters against Thomas Jefferson Sept. 20 and Hendersonville Sept. 22.

“While [Thomas Jefferson] was tough to beat with players hitting a lot of pace and angle, Hendersonville was tough because they were so very consistent,” Picher said. “They just kept the ball in, and very professionally, too. For example, Natalie’s [Hilbig] 10-game pro set of 10-6 lasted two hours because the ball just went back and forth between them. In the end, however, the girls breathed deeply, looked for the opportunities to win shots and just did it.”

The No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams made a hard-fought comeback, while No. 3 doubles held strong, which initially won the entire match for Polk.

Picher said both No. 1 and No. 2 doubles dug deep and worked together putting strategies to work that ultimately led to their wins.

The Lady Wolverines play two away matches this week including one against Avery today and on at Mountain Heritage on Thursday, Sept. 29.
