SPARTANBURG—Early voting is underway for the Spartanburg County sheriff special election, with nine Republican candidates vying to replace longtime Sheriff Chuck Wright, who resigned in May.

The primary election is set for Tuesday, August 5, with early voting available weekdays through August 1 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Spartanburg County Administration Building. If no candidate receives a majority of votes, a runoff will be held August 19.

The candidates include Robert J. Cheeks, Andy Clark, Rusty Clevenger, Adam Crisp, Nick Duncan, Randy Hollifield, Joseph A. Pilato, Bill Rhyne, and Richard “Ric” Stephens.

The winner of the primary will advance to a special general election scheduled for November 4 to serve out the remainder of Wright’s unexpired term. Early voting for the general election will be held October 20–31.

The sheriff’s seat became vacant following Wright’s resignation after more than two decades in office. The special election has drawn wide interest, with voters facing one of the most crowded local sheriff fields in recent county history.

Voters can check their registration status, view sample ballots, and find polling locations at scvotes.gov or by contacting the Spartanburg County election office.
