TRYON—In September 2024, the waters below Lake Lanier Dam surged the narrow channels along the Vaughn Creek Greenway and rose well beyond the six-foot-high embankment where a sturdy bench overlooked the creek. The waters rose an additional foot or two and carried this hundred-pound bench down the river and under the New Market Bridge, depositing it in a field one-half mile downstream past Ziglar Field.

Dave and Betsy Thompson, avid hikers of this trail, donated this bench and two others. The recovered bench has now been returned to its proper place overlooking a favorite pet swimming hole.

The Tryon Parks Committee greatly appreciates the town staff, including Brad Gordon, Kenneth Arrowwood, Zack Bennett, and Chuck Sherbert, who were instrumental in the recovery and restoration.
