POLK COUNTY—Friday, November 8, was a very busy day for Rotary Club of Tryon members. They worked with Rotary District 7670 to distribute Shelter Box supplies donated to western North Carolina.   

As many of us have learned since Helene devastated the area, sometimes these events don’t go as planned. Instead of two trucks, Rotary members were greeted with four trucks full of Shelter Box supplies. Additionally, as the Rotarians started unloading the trucks, it was discovered that the available forklift wasn’t capable of getting all the pallets off the trucks.  

Rotary Club of Tryon members Martin Gilchrist and Brandon Schweitzer stepped in, using a pallet jack to unload the trucks and get the supplies to the waiting Rotary Clubs.  

When the Rotarians returned to Polk County, Club members were waiting to help unload the supplies. Rotarian Skip Taylor organized about a dozen Rotarians to help unload supplies into a local warehouse. Polk County received more than five pallets worth of supplies.  

“If the Rotary Club of Tryon had not been there with Brandon, Martin, and the pallet jack, it would have taken many more hours and much more strain on everyone,” Rotarian Ken Shull said. “We did some good in the world on a smaller local basis.”

The Rotary Club of Tryon should be very proud of the work done by the Club members and the service they provided at this district event.
