“Read with Rescues” initiative begins Sept. 21

 

GREEN CREEK—The Sanctuary at Red Bell Run, located at 385 Blackwood Road, offers a unique and heartwarming program for children in grades K-6 with its “Read with Rescues” initiative. Starting September 21 from 1:30 to 3 p.m., young participants can meet and read to the sanctuary’s rescued miniature horses.

The monthly program encourages registered students to bring their favorite books or choose from the sanctuary’s library. Each session includes 20 to 30 minutes of reading, a hands-on experience with the equines, and engaging activities in the sanctuary’s pavilion. As a special memento, every child receives a trading card featuring one of the rescued miniature horses and a Read with Rescues T-shirt for the fall series.

Due to the program’s popularity, sign-ups are limited to 12 children per session and are typically done through Eventbrite, which opens a month in advance. According to the sanctuary, spots fill up quickly, and announcements for sign-ups are posted on their Facebook page and website events tab.

In addition to welcoming young readers, Red Bell Run encourages volunteers with childcare and education experience to assist with the program. Interested individuals can fill out a volunteer application at redbellrun.org.

The sanctuary, located on a 200-acre property boasting a 40-acre vineyard, provides a home for rescued equines and special needs animals from across the United States. Founded by Mary Adams, the sanctuary offers individualized care to over 150 equines, accepting animals from charitable organizations, animal control seizures, and on a compassion basis recommended by a veterinarian.

The “Read with Rescues” program is scheduled for September 21, October 19, November 16, and December 21.
