Tryon Little Theater continues a 50-year tradition of presenting its Summer Youth Theater production this year.
This year, the show will be Bye Bye Birdie, and auditions will be held on Thursday, April 18, from 5 to 7 p.m. and Friday, April 19, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Sunnydale, 334 S. Trade Street in Tryon (next to Dollar General).
Everyone ages 8 to 18 is invited to audition; roles for all experience and skill levels are available. For anyone who would like a little help before the audition, TLT is offering a free Youth Audition Workshop at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 13 at Sunnydale. Just show up—no reservation is required.
One of America’s best-loved musicals, Bye Bye Birdie tells the story of Conrad Birdie, a wildly popular ‘50s rock-and-roll star based on Elvis Presley. When Conrad is drafted into the army, Conrad’s manager, Albert, and Albert’s devoted secretary, Rosie, are afraid their company will not survive the loss of their star. But their schemes to save the company don’t go exactly as planned, with hilarious results.
“An Elvis-type singer, lots of teenagers, and fun music and dancing—Bye Bye Birdie has it all!” says Pam McNeil, music director for the show. “And no stage experience is needed! You’ll learn it all in rehearsals for this funny, happy show! Come out and be a part of a 50-year tradition!”
Bye Bye Birdie will be directed by Jennifer O’Rear, who directed last summer’s hit production of Cinderella. The producers will be Connie Baglia and Melanie Finch. Performances will be July 18-21 at Tryon Fine Arts Center.
