“The Importance of Being Earnest” set for May

 

Playing for two weekends, May 2-5 and May 9-12, at the Tryon Little Theater Workshop in Tryon, is Oscar Wilde’s most popular play, “The Importance of Being Earnest.” A trivial comedy for serious people, the play was first performed on the London stage in 1895. Set in the late Victorian era, it satirizes Victorian conformity and social mores.

The play tells the story of two men, Jack Worthing and Algernon Moncrieff, who both assume the identity of a fictional man named Ernest – that leads to a mishmash of problems along the way, causing all sorts of predicaments.

A wonderful group of actors has been cast: playing John “Jack” Worthing, J.P. is Kip Arrowood, Maggie Carter plays Cecily Cardew, and Kat Jones is Merriman. Luke Laughter is Algernon Moncrieff, Hillary MacArthur plays the Hon. Gwendolen Fairfax, with Paul Noga as the Rev. Canon Chasuble, D.D. Laura Depta Peal portrays Lady Bracknell, Jim Powell is Lane, Mollie Turner plays Miss Prism, and Seth and Greg Coots are the servants.
